Why You Should Not Have Your Son Circumcised
It's too late for you. You are either circumcised or you're not. But it's not too late for your sons (at least the ones who haven't been born yet.) If you are expecting a new son then we must implore you not to continue the horrible practice of circumcision that is unfortunately still the norm in the United States. The good news is that the tide is shifting as the % of newborn baby boys who are being circumcised has dropped to approximately 57% in the US.
Unlike what you may have heard there is no medical reason for the procedure.
To get some back ground on the subject let's take a look at how circumcision became the "norm" in the United States. Up until the 1880s circumcision was rare in the US. During the '80s (the 1880s that is) a doctor named John Kellogg (yes, that Kellogg) was very influential in spreading the word about circumcision.
So, you're thinking, a doctor was behind it. Then it must be good. It must be one of those modern medical ideas. Sort of like corn flakes.
Hold on a second, you haven't heard yet why John Kellogg was a proponent of circumcision. Hold onto your hats: Kellogg was a circumcision proponent because he believed that boys like to masturbate because the foreskin rubs on the head of the penis in a pleasurable way (and it does by the way.) Kellogg being a huge anti masturbation freak (yes really) said that boys should be circumcised so that they would be less likely to play with themselves. Less likely to play with themselves because masturbation would no longer be as enjoyable without their foreskin. Think about that for a bit and then hear this:
To get an idea of just how insane the idea of circumcision really is when you think about it consider that Kellogg was also against little girls masturbating. His proposed solution? Burning their clitorises with acid.
You see the birth of circumcision as a "normal" practice in America doesn't have anything to do with medicine. It has to do with a now archaic puritanical anti sexual pleasure ideal. The sort of thing that we turn our noses up in disgust when we hear about in other cultures. Well this one is all ours.
Well you may say, what about all of the medical reasons I've heard about for circumcision? Let's take a look at those one by one.
1. Prevents Cancer of the Penis
A. There's no proof of this.
B. Penis cancer is extremely rare. More males get breast cancer than penis cancer.
C. You could use the same "logic" for deciding to remove breasts to prevent breast cancer.
2. Prevents Cancer of the Cervix
A. No proof. Women in countries where circumcision is rare do not have higher rates of cancer of the cervix.
3. Prevents HIV
A. No proof. America has a higher HIV rate than many European countries where circumcision is rare.
So now that all of the so called "medical" reasons for circumcision have been debunked and you're aware of the circumcision movement's despicable beginnings how about considering some of the positives of being uncut:
1. More sensitivity. Makes masturbation more pleasure. Unlike Dr. Kellogg we don't consider this a bad thing. There is also some indication that sex itself is more pleasurable with the foreskin intact. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
2. Saves money. Circumcisions cost money.
3. Saves your son from a traumatic experience.
4. Protects against the possibility of a botched circumcision.
Yes. Botched circumcisions happen. And when they do happen they can ruin someone's life. Why even take that risk? Read about David Reimer. Is it worth even a 1 in a billion shot that this happens to your son? For what?
Circumcision is a barbaric and stupid act that should be considered child abuse.
